Best Barns

A good storage building starts with the way you will use it. Can the mower turn through the entrance? Will seasonal boxes fit overhead? Is there room to walk past the shelves once everything is inside? Best Barns offers DIY wood building kits in a range of sizes and layouts, giving you a starting structure to assemble and finish for your property.

The range extends from compact garden sheds to gambrel barns, lofted storage buildings and garage kits. Many models let you choose between different door arrangements, while selected packages add lofts, dormers or windows. Browse the products above for the configurations currently offered by Homestead Supplier. Our guide below also covers the wider Best Barns range; contact us if your preferred model or size is not listed.

Everyday Garden and Equipment Storage

The gable-roof Backyard Basecamp 12x12, Crafter's Connection 12x16 and Shedquarters 12x20 offer progressively longer footprints. Compare the entrance layouts as closely as the size: a door on the end wall creates a different approach to shelves and equipment than one on the long wall.

For smaller sites, the wider range includes the gable-roof Handmade Haven in 10x12 and 10x16, plus the 8x12 Handmade Haven Mini. The 8x12 Sophisticated Salt Box offers an asymmetric roof profile. Overhang Oasis comes in 10x10 and 10x14, combining a projecting roof with split loft storage.

Barn Styling and Overhead Storage

Craftsman's Cove 10x12 and 10x16 pair a gambrel roof with separate loft areas at the ends of the building. For a wider barn, compare Handcrafted Homestead 12x16 and 12x20, with loft and no-loft configurations. Choose overhead storage for occasional-use items, or preserve the open interior height where your equipment needs it.

Planner's Paradise takes a different approach: a steep gable roof and a storage loft running the length of the building. The Elite package adds dormers, windows and a separate walk-in entrance. Compare the Elite 12x16, 12x20 and 12x24. The broader series also includes configurations without the Elite dormer package.

Larger Buildings with a Second Level

Handcrafted Homestead XL expands to a 16-foot width, with lengths of 20, 24, 28 and 32 feet. Crafted Colossal comes in 16x28 and 16x32 with a dormer and window package. Both series include a staircase to the upper level. These are larger building projects: review foundation requirements, total height and local approvals before choosing a site.

Garage Kits and Wider Equipment Access

The Tailored Titan series offers gable-roof garage kits in 12x16, 12x20 and 12x24, including different roof, exterior-finish and entrance configurations. Maker's Loft combines a gambrel garage design with overhead storage in 12x16 and 12x20; Maker's Loft XL extends to 16x20, 16x24, 16x28 and 16x32 with a staircase and upper level. A garage-door opening does not mean a garage door is supplied. Confirm the selected package, door dimensions and any track requirements before planning vehicle access.

Plan the Building Around What Goes Inside

Start with a working layout. Measure your largest item, then allow room for shelving, a walking route and space to turn equipment. A nominal 12x16 footprint is not the same as clear interior floor space. Use the model's drawings for its foundation, overall roof dimensions and usable interior.

Match the entrance to the approach. The gable is the end wall beneath the roof peak; the eave is the wall beneath the roof edge. Check which wall carries the doors, whether their position is fixed or adjustable, and how much clearance hinged doors need. Sliding doors avoid outward swing, but still need unobstructed wall space to operate. Door choices can also change wall height.

Compare lofts by shape and access. A split loft leaves an open area between storage platforms. A full-length loft extends along the building, but its width and headroom still matter. Neither is interchangeable with the taller upper level in selected XL buildings. Check usable height, access, load limits and whether stairs or a ladder are included.

Budget for the finished project. Read the included-items list for the exact configuration. Many kits need a separately supplied floor or slab, roof covering and paint; windows and doors vary by package. Primed siding still needs finishing. Include site preparation, delivery access, tools and any hired help in your budget.

Check the site before building the base. Confirm setbacks, HOA rules, permits and the exact model's wind and snow-load documentation. Leave space for roof overhangs, assembly and future maintenance. Build the foundation to the manual's dimensions rather than rounding up the nominal shed size.

Plan a hands-on build. Best Barns kits are for on-site assembly. Pre-cut components reduce preparation, but some cutting may still be required. Read the manual before ordering, arrange capable help for larger components and unloading, and hire a local contractor if you need assembly assistance.

Best Barns Questions and Answers

Do Best Barns kits arrive assembled?

No. These are DIY building kits for assembly on your property. Installation is not included. The tools, help and time needed depend on the model, foundation and finishing work.

Is a floor included?

Check the selected configuration. Many kits are supplied without a floor so you can prepare an appropriate slab or compatible wood floor. A floor upgrade, where offered, is a separate choice. Follow the exact model's manual before constructing the base.

Are the windows, doors and roofing in the pictures included?

Inclusions vary. Many standard kits exclude windows and final roof covering, while selected Elite packages include specified windows and dormers. Garage doors and other pictured accessories may be separate purchases. Use the product's included-items list rather than the illustration to plan your order.

Can I move the doors or add windows?

Some models allow a choice of door position; others have fixed locations or different rules for each size. Windows may be optional. Check the exact configuration and its assembly manual before deciding where openings will go.

Can a lofted shed be used as a bedroom or tiny home?

A storage loft or upper level does not establish approval for residential use. Any conversion needs a separate review of local occupancy rules, structure, insulation and other building requirements. Do not assume a shed kit is a finished or approved dwelling.

Do I need a permit?

Requirements depend on your location, building size and intended use. Check with your local building department and HOA before purchase. Ask Homestead Supplier for help locating the model-specific documents you need for that review.

How should I plan for delivery?

Large kits generally arrive by common carrier for curbside delivery with liftgate unloading. Plan access for the delivery vehicle and help moving materials beyond the drop-off point. Contact Homestead Supplier with the model and your ZIP code to confirm current timing, eligibility, shipping cost and site-access requirements.

Which warranty applies to my kit?

Coverage depends on the component and its applicable terms. Review the selected product's warranty information, including any separate siding or hardware coverage. Homestead Supplier can help you locate the relevant documents before ordering.
