Does this 12x12 wood shed kit suit your backyard?

Siding: Primed LP SmartSideNominal size: 12 ft × 12 ftFootprint: 144 sq ft nominalBuild: Pre-cut DIY kitDoor layout: Hinged gable double doors

The Best Barns Backyard Basecamp 12x12 gives DIY homeowners a wood shed kit with a square, 144-square-foot footprint for organizing tools, garden gear and seasonal supplies. Its hinged double doors sit on the gable end, making it a practical choice when your planned access route approaches that end of the shed. This layout leaves both side walls uninterrupted for shelving, hooks or storage zones, helping you organize around what you keep. Allow room for the doors to swing open and measure your equipment before settling on your layout.

Benefits

  • Room to Plan: The nominal 12x12-foot foundation provides a 144-square-foot building footprint, giving you a defined space around which to organize your storage layout. That figure describes the building’s footprint, not its clear usable interior, so account for the walls when planning shelves and storage zones.
  • Flexible Gable Access: Hinged double barn doors can be centered or offset on the gable wall, the triangular roof end, to support your planned approach and layout. The published opening is 5 feet 4 inches wide by 5 feet 11 inches high. Measure equipment and allow room for door swing and turning before deciding what to store.
  • A Head Start on DIY Building: Pre-cut components and prebuilt door panels reduce the preparation you need to undertake from scratch. You still assemble the wall framing and roof trusses, with some site cutting required, making this a project for homeowners who want an active role in the build.
  • A Finish That Suits Your Property: Primed LP SmartSide siding gives you a starting surface for your chosen exterior paint. Select a color that works with your home or garden, and plan to prime and finish the trim as part of completing the exterior.
  • Control Over the Finishing Details: The floor, windows, final roof covering and paint are chosen separately from the base kit. This lets you plan those elements around your intended use and preferred appearance while accounting for the additional materials and installation work needed to complete the shed.

Features

Wood framing you assemble on site

The kit provides pre-cut framing components for a hands-on build. You assemble the wall framing and roof trusses; this is not a set of preassembled wall panels. Read the manual before preparing your work area.

Primed LP SmartSide siding

Primed LP SmartSide siding provides the exterior surface for your chosen finish. Paint is supplied by the owner. Prime the trim and door trim before finishing, and follow the use-and-care instructions for the siding and exposed edges.

Prebuilt door panels

Door panels arrive prebuilt. The builder installs the doors and the applicable door hardware using the instructions for this configuration.

Shipping & Delivery

The kit ships by LTL freight with liftgate unloading to a firm surface at the driveway end. Plan for one or two pallets and a clear unloading and staging area. The carrier usually calls to coordinate delivery, and some components may arrive separately. Moving materials beyond the driveway end is your responsibility.

What is included and what to supply

Use the packing list in the manual for this model to check the delivered materials and review the materials you will supply before ordering.

Documented kit components

  • Pre-cut wood framing components for the walls and roof trusses.
  • Siding and trim materials.
  • OSB roof sheathing.
  • Prebuilt door panels and applicable door hardware for this configuration.

Supply separately

  • A floor or a suitable concrete foundation.
  • Windows, if desired.
  • Roof covering, drip edge and roofing fasteners.
  • Exterior paint and required finishing supplies.
  • Any additional materials specified in the manual for this model.

Plan the floor, windows and roof

Floor: Supply a wood floor separately or follow this model's concrete foundation instructions. Check floor construction and foundation requirements before ordering materials.

Windows: Windows are not included. Confirm compatible styles and placement against this model's plans before preparing wall openings. Windows shown in an illustration are not a base-kit inclusion.

Roof: Roof covering is not included. The use-and-care guidance calls for shingles or metal roofing, drip edge and felt paper. Confirm the materials and fasteners required for your chosen roof before the build.

Prepare a level, square foundation

The manual uses nominal foundation dimensions of 12 ft 0 in × 12 ft 0 in. A concrete foundation follows those same nominal dimensions and uses sill sealer. Check the manual for this model and local requirements before forming a slab or building a floor.

A level, square base is essential to the build. Check the dimensions and diagonals before assembly, plan drainage, and resolve the local foundation and anchoring requirements.

Before you build

  1. Read the complete manual for this model. Review the packing list, assembly sequence, required cuts and additional materials before starting.
  2. Check your site and permissions. Resolve setbacks, permits, foundation and anchoring with the local building department.
  3. Stage tools and materials. The manuals identify a saw, drill, hammer, ladder, tape measure, square and level among the tools used.
  4. Arrange help for lifting. Plan helpers for raising walls, handling roof components and other lifting tasks.
  5. Follow the build sequence. Assemble the walls and trusses, raise the walls, fit the siding and roof sheathing, and install the doors as directed. Some cutting is required on site.
  6. Complete roofing and exterior finishing. Roof covering and paint are separate from the base kit. Have these materials ready so the building can be finished as directed.

Finishing & care

Paint the siding within 30 days of construction. Apply two coats of 100% acrylic paint or solid stain to the siding face and exposed edges. Prime all trim and door trim, then finish the exposed surfaces. Caulk above all doors and at horizontal and vertical trim as instructed.

Keep debris and vegetation away from the exterior. Maintain at least 2½ in of clearance between siding or doors and the ground. Follow the supplier's use-and-care instructions for the full coating, caulking and roofing requirements.

Engineering & local requirements

The permit set lists these truss design criteria: 150 MPH basic wind speed, Exposure C, 3-second ultimate gust and Risk Category II; 50 PSF ground snow load; 42 PSF governing roof snow load; and 50 PSF unbalanced snow load.

These figures are design criteria for the documented trusses, rather than an unconditional whole-building guarantee. Have your local building department review the packet for this model, site conditions, foundation and anchoring. Downloading a permit packet does not guarantee a permit or establish compliance at your address.

FAQs

How should I check whether my mower or other equipment will fit?

Measure the equipment at its widest and tallest points, including handles, attachments and accessories. The published opening is 5 ft 4 in wide × 5 ft 11 in high. Allow room to maneuver, and check the exact plans for interior obstructions. The nominal 144-square-foot footprint is not the clear usable interior area.

Which wall is the gable wall, and which is the eave wall?

The gable wall is the end beneath the triangular roof peak. The eave wall is the side beneath the lower roof edge. On this square shed, these names describe the roof orientation rather than different foundation lengths.

Can I move the doors anywhere on a wall?

The standard gable double doors can be centered or offset on the gable wall. Use the placement options and dimensions in the gable-door manual before framing the entrance.

How much space should I leave outside the entrance?

Plan a clear, level approach wide enough to turn your equipment. These hinged doors need room to swing. Check the manual and site layout before placing the shed next to fences, vegetation or other structures.

Can the shed go directly on a concrete slab?

The manuals provide a concrete foundation option using the same nominal 12-foot-by-12-foot foundation dimensions and sill sealer. The foundation must be level and square. Have the selected manual and local requirements reviewed before the slab is formed.

Do pre-cut parts mean I can build without a saw?

No. Some on-site cutting is required, and the walls and roof trusses are assembled by the builder. Read the complete manual before starting, check its tool and material lists, and arrange helpers for raising walls and other lifting work.

Will everything arrive together?

Some kit components may arrive separately. Prepare a firm unloading area and leave room to stage the materials. Check the delivery arrangements before dispatch so you can plan for the components as they arrive.

Are the windows and finished roof in the pictures included?

Windows, floor, roof covering and paint are separate from the base kit. The pictures show completed examples. Confirm the kit contents and the materials you supply before ordering.

Does the permit packet mean my building permit is approved?

No. Your local building department determines permit, setback, foundation and anchoring requirements. Use the packet for the selected layout. Its truss criteria are design inputs, not an unconditional rating for every completed shed or site.

What should I do before the freight truck arrives?

Prepare a firm, accessible surface at the driveway end for liftgate unloading and leave space to stage the components. The carrier usually calls to coordinate delivery. Ask Homestead Supplier to confirm access arrangements and any separate shipments before dispatch.

How do I protect the siding after assembly?

Follow the use-and-care instructions for coating, caulking and clearance. Finish siding faces and exposed edges with two coats of 100% acrylic paint or solid stain, prime and finish the trim, and maintain at least 2½ inches between the siding or doors and the ground. Keep vegetation and debris away from the exterior.
