Hold On: Water Can Flow Backwards?

That Little Device on Your Water Line Is Doing a Big Job

A backflow preventer is a mechanical device installed on your water line, usually near where the main supply enters your property. Its entire job is to act as a one-way gate. Water moves in. Water does not move out. If pressure reverses for any reason, the device shuts down and stops the reverse flow before anything dirty can get back into the system.


There are several types of backflow prevention assemblies. Reduced pressure zone (RPZ) assemblies are common for high-hazard connections like irrigation systems and commercial kitchens. If testing were not required, property owners would have no reason to check, and a silent failure could go undetected for years.


Skipping the test is not just a technical violation. Depending on your municipality, it can result in fines, a warning notice, or, in extreme cases, a water service interruption until compliance is achieved.

If everything checks out, they record the readings, fill out an official test report, and either submit it digitally to your water district or hand you a copy to mail in. If the device fails, you will need a repair before it can be certified as compliant, which is far better than discovering a problem after contaminated water has already reversed into the supply line.
