Most plumbing disasters don't announce themselves with a bang. They creep in slowly, literally, in the case of root intrusion, until one ordinary Tuesday, you're standing in the bathroom watching water drain at a pace that makes you question your life choices. Each flush of water past the intrusion carries fine debris that catches on root strands and compounds the blockage. The pipe walls, weakened at the intrusion point, begin to collapse under soil pressure.
Chemical treatments can slow growth but won't clear existing root mass or repair structural damage. That's a distinction worth understanding before spending money on stopgap solutions.
CCTV drain surveys are the standard diagnostic. A small camera is fed through the access point and transmits live footage of the pipe interior. This tells a plumber not just whether roots are present, but how extensive the intrusion is and whether the pipe wall is still intact.
