Every winter, garden centers fill with pots of tulips and hyacinths in full bloom while the ground outside is frozen solid.

Those plants did not arrive by accident or by heat. They were forced, using a technique the Dutch industrialized more than a century ago and which almost any gardener with a cold frame or an unheated greenhouse can replicate.
The method is simple. The part home gardeners consistently get wrong is the timing, and it is the timing that does all the work.
The common misunderstanding is that chilling keeps bulbs dormant until the gardener is ready.
The opposite is true. Cold is an active process. During the chilling period the bulb builds roots and undergoes an internal shift toward flowering, and without enough of it the flower will not develop properly no matter how good the conditions afterward.
The numbers are specific. University of Minnesota Extension advises potting bulbs, then giving them a cold treatment of 35 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of 12 to 13 weeks.
That is the floor, not the target. Tulips generally want longer than hyacinths, and hyacinths longer than crocus.
Depth matters at potting too. The same guidance puts tulips at about 4 inches and hyacinths at 5 to 6 inches, which is shallower than most gardeners plant them in the ground.
A bulb pulled from chilling early still roots. It also produces short stems and weak flowers, which is why so many home attempts look nothing like the pots in the store.
The Dutch built an entire industry on this principle, and the scale is worth understanding because it explains where the technique came from.
The Netherlands is the world's leading exporter of floriculture. A USDA report on the Dutch horticulture market puts the country's share of the global market at roughly 50 percent, and notes that according to Statistics Netherlands, tulips are grown on almost half of all flower bulb fields.
Celebrity Cruises groups its spring sailings through the Netherlands and Belgium into a set of bloom itineraries, and tulip season cruises of that kind run past Keukenhof and the commercial bulb fields between Leiden and Haarlem, which is where the growing operation that supplies most of the world's bulbs actually sits.
Growers there run the same chilling process a home gardener does, only in controlled rooms at industrial scale, timed so that flowers hit specific market dates rather than arriving whenever spring happens.
The principle transfers directly. What separates commercial results from home results is precision about temperature and duration, not equipment.
Most guidance suggests a refrigerator for chilling, and it works, though it has real drawbacks for anyone doing more than a pot or two.
Space is the obvious one. So is ethylene. Ripening fruit releases it, and it damages developing flower buds, so any bulbs in a domestic refrigerator need to be kept well away from produce.
Mississippi State Extension notes that storing potted bulbs between 35 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit is the requirement, and that finding a place to maintain and control that temperature is the biggest challenge in the whole process. It names unheated utility rooms, garages, basements, crawl spaces and cold frames as workable options.
A cold frame is the practical answer for volume. It holds temperature reasonably steadily, it takes far more pots than a refrigerator shelf, and it sits outside where the cold is free.
An unheated greenhouse works for the forcing stage that follows, though it usually runs too warm for the chilling stage unless it is deliberately shaded and ventilated.
The combination of both is what makes a real succession possible.
Here is the technique that separates a single flush of flowers from four months of them.
Pot everything in fall. Then bring pots into warmth in batches rather than all at once, each batch only after it has cleared its own minimum chill.
Missouri Extension notes that most tulip cultivars flower about four weeks after removal from chilling, that hyacinths are generally the easiest spring bulb to force, and that paperwhites are a form of narcissus that can be forced in pots or water without any chilling at all.
That last point is useful for filling gaps. Paperwhites and amaryllis need no cold period, so they cover the early weeks while the hardy bulbs are still chilling.
A workable schedule looks like this:
October. Pot everything, water in, label each pot with cultivar, potting date and earliest forcing date.
October to February. Chill at 35 to 48 degrees, checking moisture occasionally so the medium never dries out.
January onward. Bring one batch into a cool bright space every two weeks.
Two to four weeks later. Each batch flowers, staggered rather than simultaneous.
Labeling is the step people skip and then regret. Four identical pots in a cold frame in January are impossible to tell apart.
Forced bulbs are hard on themselves. The process draws heavily on stored reserves.
Tulips forced indoors rarely perform well again and are usually best composted. Daffodils and crocus can often be planted out afterward and will recover over a season or two, though they may skip a year of flowering.
Hyacinths sit in between and generally return smaller.
None of that is a failure. It is the trade for having tulips on a windowsill in February, which is the entire point of the exercise.
Do it once properly and the timing stops being mysterious. The cold is not a waiting period. It is the work.
